FAQ
This should answer the most frequently asked questions. If you have any further questions please get in touch with us!
When/where are auditions?
These are usually at Bilton United Reform Church, Woodfield Road, Harrogate. This is always mentioned on any advertising - check the home page and our social media (Facebook, Twitter).
There may be more opportunities to perform in concerts and shows soon. If you would like to get involved please contact us at [email protected] and we will see if we can arrange something for you.
Am I good enough to audition?
Everyone is good enough to audition! The standard of HSAP's shows are, we hope, very high. However that should not put anyone off auditioning. We are aware that not everyone can do complicated dance routines or sing in perfect harmony. Not all of the parts we have to fill require this. Some roles do not sing. The more complex dances are only given to those who can handle them. Do your best, and make your preferences, strengths and weaknesses known to the audition panel when you do your audition.
Do I need previous experience?
No.
What days do you meet for rehearsal?
For the larger shows, it varies and a rehearsal timetable is released soon after auditions, but usually includes Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings.
You will not be required to come to all of these dates, and some rehearsals will be for principals only. The rehearsal timetable will detail this. Generally, the closer to the performance date, the more intense the schedule becomes.
Cast availability is taken into account, so if you are unable to make certain days, let us know at the start of rehearsals. Schedules can often be tailored to work around this as long as we know in advance.
Is there a minimum age to join?
The minimum age will depend on the type of show as children may be required. Normally for shows that do not require children the minimum age is year 12 at school in September.
Your casts seem very young, is there a maximum age?
No! We have many older cast members and many more who help behind the scenes. We are aware that our casts have been quite young in the past and are actively trying to encourage more adult members to join us.
What needs to be prepared for auditions? / What happens at auditions?
For the larger shows we will hold our first rehearsal, which anyone can come to. We are likely to read through the script, sing through a few of the songs and maybe start to do some movement, all in a group. In subsequent rehearsals those who decide they wish to take part will have a "company audition" which will typically involve singing some scales and maybe a verse from the show as well as doing some light movement. The singing is often done solo and the movement in small groups.
If you register an interest in auditioning for a principal role you will be sent a short extract from the script which will relate to the character(s) you have chosen. If you have not yet made it to a rehearsal, please email [email protected] for more details. You will be asked to read/perform this to an auditions panel of 3-5 people, consisting of the director, musical director and HSAP committee members. You do not have to learn the piece by heart though some auditionees choose to. You will then be asked to sing a verse and/or chorus, usually from a song from the show being performed: this will also be sent to you before the audition to give you chance to practice and prepare.
Auditions may take place in groups or solo, so be prepared for either.
I don't want to sing or act, but I still want to get involved?
We need more people like you! Please get in touch with what you would like to do and we will try our best to fulfil your wishes. If we already have enough help in your preferred department, we are likely to have other roles we need help with which you may not have considered. Just a few of the supporting roles are: make-up artists, props people, stage hands, a prompt, publicists, sponsors, follow spot operators, microphone handlers, costume producers, authors for news articles and committee members.
